Android is indeed a good choice for those reasons. Not all students can afford a Mac to use at home.

Also I agree with the labels. When I first used the iPhone I thought that the little i in the corner did that, instead of showing a new screen, like settings. They should use another icon for that like a cog.

The subject sounds great. Wish we had a chance of doing it a few years back :)

@Anonymous, I think Daniel's point was that a Mobile Phone programming subject should be about Mobile Phone Programming rather than specifically tied to one type of mobile phone.

Obviously someone wouldn't enroll in a subject requiring a mac if they didn't own one. That is why this is an issue; people who want to dabble in phone programming are left with no alternative in this scenario.

That is a pretty reasonable argument and is probably why Raj is, as he mentioned, putting forward a case to push for Android.

I thought the CS193P course from Stanford was great and it's a shame that Swinburne never offered anything like that, because it was enjoyable to go through it online (including the Google groups).

Daniel, Swinburne has Mac labs. They're to be used only for subjects and by students that require Macs (e.g. some design faculty courses).

Of course, if it's an elective, then having access to a Mac is a reasonable requirement and is the fault of the student for enrolling in the subject ;).

There are other reasons though, i.e. it's A LOT cheaper to buy iOS devices than it is Android ones; a brand new iPod touch runs $289 and Apple is kind to larger institutions that buy heavily into iOS with discounts and a lot of help from Apple reps.

Why develop for the iPhone when you've got two other great platforms right at hand: Windows Phone 7 (which RTMed yesterday and tools for which have been available for ages) and Android?

If you go iPhone, what will your non-Mac toting students use to develop on? You can hardly require them to buy a Mac to do this subject, and nobody wants to be chained to a Mac-filled lab in order to do their work. Windows Phone 7 and Android can both be developed on the platform that most people already have, using tools and languages that people are already familiar with, which allows you to avoid re-covering that stuff and to focus on issues specific to mobile phone development.

iPhone was selected by the Dean for strategic reasons (it is a platform that is currently getting a disproportional media representation). I am currently putting forward a case to push for Android since it will be easier to pick up and learn.

Windows Mobile 7 will have an impact as well (though it is too early to say how much).

I'm by no means a full-time developer at this stage, but I would add import organisation (auto add/remove unused), refactoring tools (smart identifier renaming, field encapsulation, method/field extraction) and problem resolution suggestions ('Quick Fix' feature in Eclipse). Auto-formatting is quite nice as well, especially when dealing with very poorly formatted code.

I've found each of these features have substantially increased productivity for me and they are definitely missed when I'm using a basic text editor.

Interesting, though it reads more like a wish for simpler times from the past than the result of any objective analysis. The description applies perfectly well to romanticised notions of middle- and upper-class (equivalent) living in medieval times.

Economies cannot continue to grow forever and there is no harm (to the economy) if growth is zero or less. The majority of the financial crisis was the result of people's reactions - panic causes people to do stupid things, but those who did not panic did not suffer (the housing bubble is a separate issues that was localised, I'm referring to the global crisis).

I think you are correct with regards to the cheap-trinkets market, and I will also be glad to see this go and better use made of our resources. The overall value of an economy only grows if another is shrinking (eg. money moving from US to Australia) or non-economy goods are converted into economy-money (eg. selling resources). When we can't sell more resources, we stop growing.

Just wanted to note that 32bit kernels are not limited to 4GB of RAM on Intel architectures. Intel's PAE capabilities make it possible to address upto 64GB of RAM. This feature is used on OSs like certain editions of Windows, Mac OS, Solaris, Linux, etc.

There is a nice table of OS capabilities in this regard at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension.

Good point Daniel, I did think about this resource cost issue, but looking at how little Amazon EC2 is currently charging for CPU/Bandwidth/Disk use -- I fear that cost benefit issue will just not be worth it.

Interestingly, the scale is what eventually makes it worthwhile. Companies like Google count the number of bytes and continuously aim to keep that value low -- makes sense when your home page is served a couple of billion times every day.

I don't believe that cloud computing will make developers sloppier coders. At least for Azure, developers are charged via a pricing model that is very tightly bound to resource consumption. So if you consume more, you pay more. So it seems that being lazy and consuming just because you can will smack you right in the hip-pocket, which I doubt management will appreciate much.

Nevertheless the fact does remain that it would be a very costly affair to fill an iPod by legitimate means, even if it were 50c songs. That's not a stab at the iPod really, more a stab at the music industry / itunes for selling ~128kbps junk at FLAC prices... Obviously the Zune is no better and the idea of 'renting' music is as preposterous as paying for a slightly more usable version of the common radio. Piracy still rules supreme.
